How we treat the world around us is important, but sometimes we fail to realize that we make an impact.  Each minute in the shower, each bottle of water, adds up.  Solar Fest at Keene State College is an opportunity to raise awareness where you would least expect it.  On this website, explore what makes Solar Fest such an important event by learning about the people and activities that take place throughout.

“…if the whole complex lives of many people go on unconsciously, then such lives are as if they had never been.[3] And so life is reckoned as nothing. Habitualization devours work, clothes, furniture, one’s wife, and the fear of war. “If the whole complex lives of many people go on unconsciously, then such lives are as if they had never been.” And art exists that one may recover the sensation of life; it exists to make one feel things, to make the stone stony. The purpose of art is to impart the sensation of things as they are perceived and not as they are known. The technique of art is to make objects “unfamiliar,” to make forms difficult, to increase the difficulty and length of perception because the process of perception is an aesthetic end in itself and must be prolonged. Art is a way of experiencing the artfulness of an object: the object is not important…”

Viktor Shklovsky’s writing can be used to explain the importance of Solar Fest at Keene State College.  In “Art as Technique” Shklovsky analyzes the regular, habitual aspects of our lives that become unconscious.  Art he describes is here to wake us from the unconscious patterns of our life, and force us to think about something in a new way.  In regards to Solar Fest, the entire idea behind it is to draw people in through music.  At Keene State College, live music is not something that is seen every day.  Combine this with all of the activities of the day, and an audience is drawn in.  This creates connections that inspires people to think in new and creative ways.  The kind of moment that says to WAKE UP.  It is yelling, LOOK AT WHAT WE ARE DOING HERE! We are playing music through solar power! It is easy! Come join and hang out!

It is easy to fall into a pattern.  People are busy, there are not many exceptions to that rule.  This is why it is so vital to provide opportunities that individuals might not otherwise have, and for these individuals to latch onto these opportunities and educate oneself as much as possible.

The event is filled with environmental themes, so even those who stop by briefly will be introduced to several concepts.  In the last few years, if you stick around long enough you will hear environmental speakers that come to stage to spread there message.  Everyone who works to put Solar Fest together has the same goal- environmental advocacy.
